Copper Country Community Arts Center Clay Studio & Clay Co-op
The Copper Country Community Arts Center Clay Studio is home to an active clay co-operative run by dedicated volunteers. The mission of the clay co-op is: “To give opportunity to individuals for creative expression in a group environment that promotes interactive learning while maintaining minimal costs.”
CLAY CO-OP MEMBERSHIP
In order to join the clay co-op you must have prior experience with clay. Clay co-op membership is open to adults ages 18 and older. The CCCAC periodically offers clay classes. The clay co-op itself is not a class, but members have the opportunity to share their clay knowledge with other members during Late Night at the Clay Studio.
Joining the co-op includes studio usage during Arts Center open hours, Tues-Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday 10am-2pm and during Late Nights in the Clay Studio. Use of tools, materials, glazes, and firings are also included. All co-op members are required to sign in and out at the front desk during open hours or Late Nights in the Clay Studio. Attending Late Nights is not a free session; it counts as studio use hours on your punch card.
Beginning Monday February 6, 2024 the Clay Co-Op starts their rotating "Late Night in the Clay Studio" schedule:
Late Nights February & March - Mondays (starts Feb 6) from 5-7pm
Late Nights April, May & June - Tuesdays (starts April 2) from 5-7pm
Late Nights July, August & September - Wednesdays (starts July 3 or 10) from 5-7pm
Contact [email protected] or volunteer clay co-op manger Tammy Gajewski at [email protected] about how to join.
As a co-op member, you are expected to share in cleaning tasks and annual clean up. As a cooperative group, it is encouraged you participate in occasional clay co-op fundraisers. Fundraisers are organized in the event the studio needs a repair, update, or members decide they would like to purchase special equipment or tools. The minimal costs to use the clay studio are able to be kept low only if everyone contributes!

Before using the Clay Studio, clay co-op members are required to:
-Become an annual member of the Copper Country Community Arts Center. Membership is purchased annually and starts at $25, the artist level. This membership must be renewed each year.
-Fill out the clay co-op membership packet and sign the personal injury waiver agreement.
-Receive an orientation. Orientations are scheduled in advance with one of the volunteer clay co-op managers, Tammy Gajewski or Kay Oliver, during Late Nights at the Clay Studio.
-Purchase a punch card. Punch cards are $45 for 15 hours of studio time and expire three months after date of purchase.
Typically the total fee for a new member is $80: $25 annual Arts Center membership at the artist level + $45 punch card + 10lbs of clay. After that, punch cards and clay are purchased on as-need basis; Arts Center memberships must be renewed at the beginning of the year.
STUDIO USE
-All members are required to keep the studio tidy and clean up after themselves.
-Only clay purchased through the clay co-op is to be used in the clay studio.
-Firings: The volunteer clay co-op managers schedule all firings and load the kiln. They are unable to fire projects made from non co-op members. An extra fee and/or punch card hours are subtracted if you work on projects at home and not in the clay studio. This will be determined by the clay co-op managers.
EQUIPMENT
The CCCAC Clay Studio has five electric wheels, one kick wheel, one wedging table, 1-2 tables for hand building, two automatic kilns: Skutt (Model 1227) & Duncan (Model 400), earthenware clay, and a variety of glazes (05/06), underglazes, and tools.
PURCHASING CLAY & GLAZES
-Clay is currently $1.50/lb. Clay is purchased at the front desk or from a Clay Co-op Manager.
-Glazes are purchased by clay co-op member contributions. All members are expected to contribute to the purchasing of glazes that are used by co-op members.
Note about youth & clay: We always strive to encourage art education and skill development in youth, however our clay co-op does not have an on site studio monitor and is run by volunteers donating their time. Youth under 18 interested in joining the clay co-op must be accompanied by an adult with experience in clay, both would need to join the co-op, purchase punch cards, and adhere to studio use rules.
