Animal Life, Art from the Kalevala is an annual exhibition in coordination with the City of Hancock’s Heikinpäivä mid-winter celebration. The Kalevala is a 19th century work of poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Finnish and Karelian oral folklore and mythology. It is the national epic poem of Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature.

Submitted artwork includes painting, printmaking, digital, clay sculpture, wood carving, paper quilling, fiber art and feature bear, owl, hare, swan, cuckoo, honey bee, pike, deer, horse, cows, squirrel, raven, and ox.
The artists that are part of the exhibition are: Julie Bakkila, Bob Dawson, Terri Frew, Charlotte Haanela, Pamela Hecht, Lindsey Heiden, Cynthia Hodges, Jeanne Houle Peters, Madhura Mehendale, Angel Miller, Lynn Jarvi, Kristi Kangas, Joyce Koskenmaki, Nancy Kromer, David Kronberg, Nancy Langston, Bonnie Loukus, Bethany Lüventhorn, Alice Margerum, Clyde Mikkola, Kay Oliver, Amanda Stump, Kristina Sundstrom, Lori Swanson, and Lisa Wiitala.
