Free Book Arts Programs for 8th-12th Grade Students
The Copper Country Community Arts Council received a grant award from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs New Leaders Programthat will help fund our Booked UP: Free Book Arts Programs for 8th-12th grade students..  We have a variety of classes, programs, and two sessions of Book Arts Camp offered this summer.  Sessions begin in mid May with a Drawing Group led by Abigail Tembreull and Inseo Yoon.

Drawing Group with Abigail Tembreull & Inseo Yoon
Two four-week sessions, Fridays from 4:30-6pm
Session I: May 18, 25, June 1, & 8
Session II: Friday, June 22, 29, July 6, & 13

Drawing Group for 8th-12th graders starts in May!  Students can stop by and draw together in the beautiful Arts Center classroom under the guidance of two young accomplished artists, Abigail
Tembreull and Inseo Yoon. Bring a drawing that you’ve been working on. This isn’t a formal class, but a group that meets to draw and share techniques with each other. Bring your favorite drawing implements or use ones at the Arts Center! 
Please register for Drawing Group by May 16.

Bookbinding with Bonnie Loukus
Tuesday, June 12 4:30-6pm

Students will learn how to make 2-3 basic pamphlet books using quality paper and materials. Pamphlet books don’t require any glue and are easy to modify after learning the basic structure.
Register by June 5.

Letterpress I with Daniel Schneider
Tuesday, June 19 4:30-6pm

In the tradition of William Shakespeare and William S. Burroughs, students will write lines of verse. In the tradition of Walt Whitman and Virginia Woolf, students will set their own lines of type by hand. In the tradition of the French surrealists, students will assemble their lines of type in random order and print an edition of exquisite corpse poetry broadsides.
Register by June 12.

Letterpress 2 with Daniel Schneider
Tuesday, June 26 from 4:30-6pm

Make new art with old machines. Students will work together to print posters with bright-colored ink and big wood type letters on the '47 Vandercook Proofing Press. Each participant will take home three posters: one to keep, one to share, and one to hang up somewhere! Register by June 19.

Book Arts Camp Session I
July 10, 11, & 12  Tues-Thurs from 10am-3pm

This is a unique opportunity for students in grades 8-12 to study bookbinding, creative writing, zines, paper marbling, letterpress printing, and block printing. Students should have an interest in ART or curiosity to learn some of the fine craft behind book arts. 
Deadline to apply is June 26.

Writing Workshop with Stephanie & Isaac Flint
Tuesday-Thursday July 17, 18, & 19 from 1-3pm

Join writers Stephanie and Issac Flint in this three day workshop geared for young writers.  Students will learn techniques and receive structured writing prompts that will help develop their style. 
Deadline to register: July 10.

Book Arts Camp Session II
July 24, 25, & 26 Tues-Thurs from 10am-3pm

This is a unique opportunity for students in grades 8-12 to study bookbinding, creative writing, zines, paper marbling, letterpress printing, and block printing. Students should have an interest in ART or curiosity to learn some of the fine craft behind book arts.
Deadline to apply is July 10.

Block Print Cards with Abigail Tembreull
Tues. July 31 & Thurs. August 2 from 4:30-6pm

Learn how to carve a basic image out of a linoleum and then print it to create a set of hand made cards.  Deadline to register: July 24.

These free sessions for 8th-12th graders are made possible by a New Leaders Grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and support by the Portage Health Auxiliary.


REGISTER IN ADVANCE!  A waiting list will be formed when classes fill.  Call 482-2333 or email [email protected] to register before the deadline. Free classes are only made possible by grant support. Please be courteous!  We ask that if you are unable to make the class, to please call and let us know so that another student on the wait list may come.
