The Copper Country Community Arts Center's new exhibition is Finding Relief Printing - reduction block prints by Marquette artist, Dave Berg in the Kerredge Gallery July 5-31.
Dave Berg had just finished building his Lookout, providing a fantastic view of Lake Superior and surrounding forests south of Marquette when he decided he wanted to make art to reflect his love for the UP wilderness. Reduction block printing appealed to him. He felt he could grasp the process and he liked working with wood. He decided to teach himself by delving into books and employing a trial and error method. Dave eventually found helpful feedback from online printmaking forums. In just five years his work has progressed from simple one or two color block prints to complex textural multi-color prints depicting lush tree lines, lakes, waterfalls, and rocky outcroppings indicative of the north woods landscape.
Berg, a native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has had his work included in juried exhibitions at Sault Area Art Center, Sault Ste Marie, Bonifas Art Center, Escanaba, Northern National Art Competition at Nicolet College, Rhinelander, and North of the 45th at DeVos Art Museum, Marquette. His art has been chosen for Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore banners in Munising and Art Plus, an international print exhibition in Périgueux, France.
Everyone is welcome to the reception on Thursday, July 11th from 6-7:30pm. The artist will give a brief gallery talk about his work, his inspiration and the printmaking process. Refreshments will be served. This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

In her statement about this exhibition Catherine Benda says, “I am inspired by the restorative relationship between humans and plants. The shapes, textures, and colors are an endless source of inspiration, infinitely repeated in paint and thread and continuously piquing my curiosity. Moving between these two mediums, I ask myself: What happens to the colors and shapes, to the scale and repetition, to the deliberate and detailed? How does the thread move through my fingertips, and how does the paint sweep across the surface? This work allows me to explore patterns in changing environments and create pieces that reflect the cycle of decay, loss, new growth, and stability.”
Catherine Benda grew up in Detroit but has spent over 40 years residing on the shores of Lake Superior. She earned her BFA from Central Michigan University with a focus on painting and drawing. She currently works in paint, thread, and paper. Her paintings and textile projects have been shown in galleries both regionally and nationally. Her work can also be seen on Instagram @ruhlbenda.
This exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 11-6 and Saturday 10-2.
